Isaiah 9:6 NIV
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
I am the worst at gifting. It’s the lowest one of my love languages. It’s anxiety inducing for me. As the giver, I would always worry about if they would like it, or use it, or even keep it. What would they think about me and my thought process when selecting this gift for them? Will they judge me? Will they think it’s not enough, or it’s too much? Is the gift that I chose equal to or exceeding the perceived value of the person in my life, or the occasion for which the gift is being given? Does it fall in the right quadrant of that Venn diagram that computes appropriateness of price versus value?
It is to man’s infinite fortune that God is not such an awkward or anxious gift-giver.
Jesus is often referred to as the greatest gift ever in the history of the earth. Unparalleled and unrivaled before or since.
In terms of price versus value, this exchange is also the most uneven of matches. It is akin to gold for dust, beauty for ashes, pearls before swine.
No matter which way you look at it, we don’t deserve the gift that is Jesus Christ. And yet, it is exactly what God went ahead and gave us, with no regard for merit or eligibility, no expectation of return, exchange or payment. When He gives, He gives unreservedly.
Can you imagine if God counted His gifts against us, or slapped our face with His sacrifice? Or if He pieced Jesus out, so to speak, granting grace and forgiveness in portions depending on every man’s value. We would end up with nothing. We would end up in debt!
This is worth talking about, bragging about, shouting from the rooftops about!
Jesus is the ultimate gift, and we are blessed to receive Him into our hearts, and privileged to have the opportunity to share about Him whenever we can.
