God’s Way of Blessing is Giving

25I assure you that there were many widows in Israel in Elijah’s time, when the sky was shut for three and a half years and there was a severe famine throughout the land. 26Yet Elijah was not sent to any of them, but to a widow in Zarephath in the region of Sidon.

Luke 4:25-26

9 “Go at once to Zarephath of Sidon and stay there. I have commanded a widow in that place to supply you with food.” 10 So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, “Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?” 11 As she was going to get it, he called, “And bring me, please, a piece of bread.” 12 “As surely as the LORD your God lives,” she replied, “I don’t have any bread—only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it—and die.” 13 Elijah said to her, “Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small cake of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son. 14 For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD gives rain on the land.’ “

1 Kings 17:9-14
  1. We all have something to give
    • God wants us to start sowing seeds to get a good harvest (blessings).
    • God’s love is unlike man’s love. It is greater, and all-encompasing.
    • Obedience is following God’s instructions even though sometimes they do not make sense.
    • Obedience and faith results in net-sinking and boat breaking blessings – Luke 5:1-7
    • God wants us to partake in the blessings of the Kingdom.
    • A bell is not a bell until you ring it
A song is not a song until you sing it
Love is not love until you give it
    • God wants us to give our best right now (so that the blessings will also come right now).
    • All of us have something that we can give to God, and whatever we have we should bring it to the Lord.
    • Whenever we say that we have nothing to give, we are limiting God.
    • God wants us to be a blessing to others.
    • Be excellent, and be diligent
  2. Give and expect God to bless you
    • Give and it will be given to you, “pressed down, shaken together, and running over”.
    • As you tithe, tithe forward, having faith, declaring as you do so that you believe God will provide for you and will never forsake you.
    • The people of God will never become poor.
    • Just as you don’t read the Bible because you have to, but because you thirst for the Word, you shouldn’t come to church because it is an obligation, but because you long to praise and worship and be refreshed with the service and the fellowship.
    • God is not an unreasonable God, not someone who just takes and takes without due recourse.
    • God is forever and always positioning you for a blessing.
    • Giving back to God is never a waste.
