In Pursuit of His Word

“When I first came to you, dear brothers and sisters, I didn’t use lofty words and impressive wisdom to tell you God’s secret plan. For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified.

And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit. I did this so you would trust not in human wisdom but in the power of God.”

‭‭1 Corinthians‬ ‭2:1-2, 4-5‬ ‭NLT‬‬

We are not being asked to be impeccably versed in every word that is inside the Bible. No one is asking us to be letter perfect, to memorise entire chapters, to know every detail, number, and character, effortlessly spouting off Bible trivia from thin air when the situation calls for it.

It helps, for sure. It wouldn’t hurt to know some verses by heart. It’s not a qualifier. But it is a great help.

What we are being asked to do is to love the Word. Desire it so much that want to pursue it. Need it so much that we can’t live without it.

With the Holy Spirit comes understanding. With prayer and meditation comes discernment. With God’s blessing comes wisdom.

These sound like pithy aphorisms, and they are. But they are also true. A wealth of knowledge distilled down to the very essence of truth – we need the Word of God in our lives.

This love for the Word should manifest itself in relentless pursuit. Just like there are things that we cannot live without on a daily basis, so should we not go one day without reading at least one verse from the Bible. Just like we have habits and routines formed through our many years on earth, so should we form the same proclivity for reading the Word of God.

Fortunately, out of this desire will come the compulsion to pick up the Book and read. It may be a physical paper book, or an app on your phone, or a website on a browser. God does not discriminate against the medium that you choose to consume His Word. What’s important to Him is that you are taking it all in, letter by letter, phrase by phrase.

And then comes the glorious overflow; the after effect that is inevitable after loving the Word so much – you will be blessed. Your movements will be strong and deliberate. Your decisions will be informed and well-examined. Your words will be more powerful. Your heart will be lighter.

You will be blessed.

Reading the Bible will have these effects. Loving the Word will bring about these blessings.

For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.

Matthew 12:34 NKJV

The decision is simple, and yet the rewards are so so great. Start reading the Word of God today.
