Head Over Feet, an unwarranted analyzation

Sometimes song writers get it just right. Like this song from this artist I like.  Let’s get right to it.

I had no choice but to hear you
You stated your case time and again
I thought about it

Now this here is good old fashioned courting.  The guy seemed to have pursued her to no end, stating his case “time and again”.  It’s very biblical.  The girl is reflective and introspective.  She did not give in easily.  Good girl.

You treat me like I’m a princess
I’m not used to liking that
You ask how my day was

Now, it’s courting, but with friendship involved.  That’s just lovely.  The second line implies that she’s known the guy for quite some time, because she’s now not used to the things that he’s doing for her.  I like that.  They had the time to get to know one another before moving closer.

And hello, treating the girl like the princess?  This guy is good.

You’ve already won me over in spite of me
And don’t be alarmed if I fall head over feet
Don’t be surprised if I love you for all that you are
I couldn’t help it
It’s all your fault

“In spite of me” describes a girl who is not used to this kind of attention.  She wasn’t expecting this relationship, this change in their dynamic.  The words “alarm” and “surprise” serve to further support this. Also, “love you for all that you are” implies that she know this is the right way to love someone: all in.

Those last two lines are just cheesy-sweet.

Your love is thick and it swallowed me whole
You’re so much braver than I gave you credit for
That’s not lip service

Here, she’s being earnest.  She knows what she’s saying seems so unbelievable, they are metaphorical after all, but she still wants to establish her sincerity with what she’s saying.

But to be honest, these are my least favourite lines in this song.

You are the bearer of unconditional things
You held your breath and the door for me
Thanks for your patience

Love!  Unconditional love! (Although I do hope for this fictional girl’s sake that her eyes are opened enough to see that real unconditional love can only be found in Jesus, and that there will come a time, or many times, when the guy will stop opening doors for her, and that it’s fine because she has to pick her battles, and Jesus is love, etc.)

That last line slays me as well.  He waited.  He was patient.  He held his breath for her.  Aww.

You’re the best listener that I’ve ever met
You’re my best friend
Best friend with benefits
What took me so long

Since this is a secular song, I’m not going to pretend the writer doesn’t mean anything naughty in the third line.  I can gush over the first two lines though.  Every good relationship has to have a strong friendship as a foundation.  And listening to each other is very important.

I’ve never felt this healthy before
I’ve never wanted something rational
I am aware now
I am aware now

She’s healthy because he’s taking care of her, how sweet is that!  He cares about her needs.  He takes care of her, especially the parts that she’s blind to, the parts about herself that she either doesn’t see, or can’t see anymore, not because she’s close-minded, but because it’s been her day to day norm for so long that it’s become routine, and not just physical stuff, but emotional and mental as well, and that’s saying something because she thought that she’s over and above all things emotional, but it turns out she’s not.

And that last one is a run on sentence; it is terrible, and I am keeping it.

So that’s the entire song.  The rest of it is just the chorus over and over again.

Not that I’m being coy about it, but you can probably tell that I am relating to this song so much.  So so much. Full disclosure though, someone else once included this song in a mix tape type gift for me (that meant so much to me at that time), but I didn’t really relate to the lyrics until now, in this current relationship.

This overly long and unnecessary song analyzation has been brought to you by sugar free coffee and cheesy cheese cheesecake.
